July 5th: Threading the Needle

Hello, camp families!  Today was one of those days where we had to brace ourselves for inclement weather.  Every morning, Assistant Director Desi Fowler gives us a summary of the day’s forecast, and today rain was in the cards. 70% chance!  It seemed very unlikely that we would get the day in with a full schedule of activity periods.  Desi shared what we call in our morning meeting “The Fowler Forecast”, and as program director, I knew a rainy day plan was needed.  By 10:15, it was sprinkling, and the rainy day plan was made.

Which meant, of course, we had a day of “threading the needle.”  Over the years, we have observed an oddity of weather phenomena where a line of showers heads straight towards us and then crumbles and breaks as it approaches Arbor Vitae.  Today, we had two parallel lines of showers to our north and south, but for us it meant a few drops of rain but otherwise a warm and cloudy day.  The rainy day plan was never needed.  Would it have rained if we hadn’t made the plan? I think it most certainly would have, but we’ll never know for sure.  Regardless, it was a grey but otherwise fun and typical day.  We are always grateful for what we have come to call “The Timberdome,” keeping us on the dryer side when everywhere around us is dealing with rain and thunderstorms.
Lunch today was chicken patties and fries fresh from the fryer.  This is a camp favorite and never fails to elicit a cheer when it is announced.  We are also in our last day of preparations before UN Day tomorrow, and after all our exertions yesterday, the camp is having a quiet day today. Adults and campers are TIRED, in a good way.  Tomorrow we will engage in a day of friendly competition, but that’s a blog for tomorrow.
For tonight, thanks for reading, and have a great week!
Best wishes,
Jeff Melrose
