July 16th 2024 – First Day of Activities

Today, the routine returned to normal for our  8-weekers.  We had a regular day, and that felt just fine.  For our 4-weekers, it was the first day of a normal camp day, and the weather cooperated fully.  The temperature was in the 70s, and the sun shone mightily upon the lake and the athletic fields.

After a morning of activity periods and some free period fun, lunch was tacos.  We do tacos well, but depending on where you sit at our tables, you must either pass food constantly or wait for food to be passed to you.  I’m usually waiting, but I don’t mind. It’s an excellent opportunity to watch the activity of the lodge at mealtime. I  observe the counselors helping pour drinks and checking in on everyone’s mornings, and campers passing dishes and laughing at each other’s stories of the day.   The family feel of the cabins is coming along very nicely already.

After lunch, we had our Big Brother/Little Brother program, in which the first-year campers met their camp-assigned “big brother” and then played a big game of ga-ga as partners.

After rest period, we had a regular afternoon of 2 activity periods and a free period, followed by pizza dinner we make from scratch in-house.  Our kitchen crew works hard, and we are fortunate to have the vast majority of our food made from scratch by our kitchen manager, Brian Strain, and his incredibly hard-working crew.  Our lunch desserts have been insanely good this year; Brian REALLY knows how to make the perfect cookie. Today’s was a double-chocolate chocolate chip, and they didn’t last long.

Our last event today was a new EP based on the book/movie/boardgame Jumani.  Two of our counselors took the idea and ran with it, and our CITs kept all the groups moving and having a great night.  A  giant gameboard was created, and of course we had 3-foot-tall dice for the teams to roll.  Make sure to check out our photo gallery page to see all the activities and tonight’s evening program!

Tomorrow looks like another great day, weather-wise. Hopefully, it’ll be a great day for you as well. Thanks for reading, and come on back tomorrow for the daily update!  Until then, as we say to dismiss from our meals…

Benches up,
Jeff Melrose
