July 18th: 1st Campfire of the Summer

Today was a great day! The weather was pleasant, with some light clouds and mild temperatures which made keeping the energy level high all the easier.

It was, in particular, a fantastic day on our waterfront.  The hardworking ski staff put in our slalom course and worked intensively with our oldest and most advanced skiers to prepare for next week’s Kawaga ski tournament.    While the staff was very enthusiastic, one of the best parts of watching this small group of committed individuals work towards their goals was the encouragement they provided for one another.

We had a campfire this evening.  It was the first of the session, and the first with a new tradition of having camp alum Mike Pierce come by to play guitar and inspire a new generation of campfire guitar players.   MP played A Boy Named Sue, Wagon Wheel, and other classic songs.  We ended with a very sweet keylog ceremony with lots of our first-time campers getting up to share their appreciation for the connections they made this week in their cabins and across camp.
We had a bit of a cold going through camp the past few weeks as well, and it’s now a few isolated sniffles, but the campers have really embraced using camp’s hand-washing station to clean up before meals, and it has become a truly fun community moment for everyone to lather up before heading into the lodge.   It’s the kind of mundane task that is made more fun when you do it with your best friends by your side, and for the goal of the common good.
Tomorrow is Casino Night.  It should be an epic day!!! I hope yours is as well.
Best wishes,
