Hello again, camp families! I’m Jeff Melrose, camp’s program director, just sharing the day’s events!
Today was our last day of the second series of activities. At camp, an activity series is comprised of 5 days of the same schedule of activity periods. Five days gives enough time to instruct and practice a set of skills and then put them into practice with games or other experiences, like a first attempt up the wall or a round of disc golf. In my last writing, I shared how the calendar is more of a theoretical construct around here, as the idea of “days of the week” fades a bit as the weeks go on. The activities series, however, remain as a way of measuring the summer’s progress. We get to not only track the summer as the series numbers advance, but also by watching the boys improve and grow through the instruction, coaching, and guidance the counselors provide.
So, as the second series of activities comes to a close, it is remarkable to realize we are now 2/3 of the way through the first session, and that’s dangerously close to the halfway mark for the summer. Can the time truly be passing so quickly? Apparently so!
Today was a typical day for us. Cabin cleanups pushed back the sand we prepared for laundry day tomorrow. The morning activities took place under a brilliantly blue sky with some high cirrus clouds, and sunscreen was applied liberally. The kitchen made hand-rolled chimichangas for lunch, with an ice cream sandwich (or popsicle) as a dessert, and the afternoon was more of the same weather (with some clouds moving in as we got closer to dinnertime) and also plenty more fun at activities.
Dinner was another fantastic spaghetti dinner with garlic bread and green beans, and then we had the second round of Blue and White games involving lots of traditional sports. It was a quieter evening than usual, and looking around the lodge at dinner, it was apparent why: our 19 CITs were out of camp, as well as FIVE different wilderness trips. One whole cabin is out on trips, most of them to explore the Sand River this week. It will be fantastic to hear about their adventures when they return over the next few days.
Here’s hoping your day was full of some good adventures as well. Thanks for reading, and have a great rest of your week!
Best wishes, and benches up!
