Volume LVIII, No. 1, September, 2017

Dear Campers, Parents, Staff, Alums & Friends,

Okay, it’s crazy that the camp season has already ended.  Already 3 weeks ago!  And it’s CRAZY that summer is winding down and school has started for almost all of our campers.  And it’s REALLY CRAZY that so many of our staff are back at college already.  Ya wanna know what is NOT crazy?  We’re already getting set and excited for the 2018 camping season!!  There’s a lot to do between now and then, but we are enthusiastically getting to it, and we know you are too!

This is truly a fun time to be at camp.  It’s definitely way too quiet, but it is beautiful and very peaceful.  And there’s a lot of work going on.  DANIEL VAN BUREN stayed up for an extra week, and spent some time staining the Rec Hall and the Arts & Crafts Shop, fixing up some screen doors and windows, repairing some waterskis, and tidying up around camp.  BILL MILLER is still up here with us, and he’s been cleaning and painting in the kitchen.  As we speak (assuming you’re reading this right now….are you?), we have roof work beginning on Wolf Cabin, the Chalet, and the Ropes Course Shed, some foundational work getting started on the Maintenance Shop and Iroquois Cabin, and there is something else….what was it…oh yeah!  The construction of a BRAND NEW BOARDWALK!  Whoah!  By the time we leave camp later this month, a lot will already be completed.  We’re going to be looking so pretty when we open up next May!!

And as if that isn’t enough, not only do we have more projects coming up, but we have also launched our brand new, totally cool, mobile-friendly website!  This has been in the works for several months, and we think it looks great.  We hope you’ll take a little look around (and then go outside and play!), and please tell your friends about it.

AND while you’re telling your friends about that, you can also tell them about our awesome brand new promotional video!!  Hey…for those of you keeping track, that’s 3 “brand news” in this one newsletter.  Not too shabby!  That’s right, folks, our illustrious videographer alumnus, RYAN COHEN spent several days at camp taking new footage, interviewing campers and counselors, and the end result is a 17 minute video that tells the story of Timberlane.  There is a nice mix of 2017 footage and some that is older.  You can view it right from the front page of our new website.  From there you can download the video if you want, or you can get the link and share it with friends and relatives.  Please take a few moments to do that for us.  We’re in the “off-season,” which for us means we’re out there looking for new campers, and we really benefit from any help you can provide.  We try hard to avoid being in your face about this because, well, it’s OUR job to get kids into camp.  That being said, you could be a huge help in that endeavor by sharing your thoughts about your kids’ experiences with us with your friends, relatives, neighbors, etc.  If you have some folks you’d like us to contact about camp, it’s easy to tell us about it.  You can email us or give us a call.  The fact is, more than 90% of our new campers each summer come to us through our current camp families, so please give it some thought, and we appreciate any folks you can help us connect with.  Thanks! So please pass the word…and the website…and the video!!  Thanks.

Memory Books, in case you are wondering, will be delivered to Chicago area campers at the camp reunion on November 11th.  The photographer is from the area, so this makes things easier for him and faster for those campers to get their books.  If you cannot attend the reunion (what?!), or if you don’t live in the Chicago area, your reunion books will be mailed to you straight from the photographer by mid-November.

We want to thank everyone on our staff, as well as all of the camp parents and alums who participated in this year’s Green Grows the Camperships matching program.  Together we raised more than $20,000 to send awesome kids to camp!  Way to go, everyone!  Thanks very much!!  If you missed the chance to participate in this effort, that’s okay…you can always make a donation to CFAK.  If you want to recognize the great work your kids’ counselors did this summer, a tribute in their honor is an awesome way to do that.  Please let us know if you have any questions about that.

The folks in the Houston area have been dealing with a horrific situation.  We have tried to contact all of our camp people in the area, and have heard from some.  We know they’re focused on more critical things than replying to camp, so we just hope they’re doing okay.  The people we’ve heard from are all safe.  A few have not experienced flooding in their homes, but some have.  Those folks have a very healthy perspective…they know it’s bad, but they’re thankful that their family is safe.  Our thoughts are with them every day.

Elsewhere, in Seattle, ELI WACKSMAN has been doing some skateboarding, prepping for a middle school entrance exam, and “recovering” from the summer.  In Tucson, DAVID BERK has started school and is hoping to join the school robotics team.  In Omaha, JAKE & OLLIE LUCOFF met up with ELI GARBER, who was in town from Chicago visiting relatives.  In Chicago, some guys had an impromptu mini camp reunion

DAVID ARTZI was in Chicago on his way to Arizona, and met up with some area campers.  DUSTY COHEN hung out at camp for a week or so after the kids left, helped close down some cabins, and then hit the road.  He met up with ERICA FLORIMONTE and RYAN MC DONOUGH in Glacier Nat’l. Park.  SAMMY COHEN is in Chicago getting ready to start school at Northwestern.  PRESTIN COOKE is in Flagstaff getting ready to start school at NAU.  JAKE FLOM has recovered well, and has departed for Ann Arbor to start school at Michigan.  MYLES ROSENSTEIN has put his LGT to work already at a local country club in Chicago.  GRANT KIBEL is doing the same thing at a YMCA in the Boston area.  “Old-timer” JACK LYNCH has started his freshman year at UC-Boulder, and is rooming with “old-timer” DAVID GLAZER.  While settling in, Jack, his parents, and David bumped into DAVID HEIMAN who was in from Chicago visiting friends.
