Notes from Camp – October, 2022

Hi Folks,

IT OCCURS TO ME:

Hi folks,

Happy fall. I hope that everyone has had an excellent start to the school year. The leaves have changed, and there is snow up at camp.  I have been home for a few weeks, and we are focused on preparing for next summer.

After the boys left camp, we had an alumni reunion at camp to celebrate our 60th summer (a little delayed). The reunion saw 200 alumni from 1961 – 2022. The alumni reunion had alums ages 21 – 88 years old joining us from around the county. For four days, there was laughing, storytelling, reconnecting, and just hanging out. We did have activities, including some fan favorites (waterskiing and trampball), but the real magic was hanging out with many generations of the Camp Timberlane community.

A community is a group of people that have a feeling of fellowship with others due to sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals. This definition of community was evident in many ways during the reunion.  The reunion brought back many different alums with different connections to Timberlane; some had spent a few years at camp, while others had spent over a decade at camp. Alums came having been campers, staff members, and both. No matter the reason for coming to the reunion, they all had a strong connection to camp. This shared love of camp made intergenerational conversations normal and easy.

At Timberlane, supporting and being partners in Camp for All Kids has always been important to our community. Timberlane has had a profound impact on our lives as a community we want to make sure more kids have the ability to come to camp. During the reunion, we found multiple ways to support Camp for All Kids.  I am very proud to announce that as an alumni group, we did raise $50,000 for Camp for All Kids. I am very proud of the Timberlane community.

During the reunion, we watched a video made by alum Ryan Cohen. It is a pretty amazing video that shows camp through the past 60 years. Take a look here 60th Reunion Video.

During this offseason, remember that June is closer than you think, and soon, the busses will be driving down camp road. You’ll get the familiar feeling of getting off the buses and reuniting with your friends and staff. These things will help all of us get through the offseason.

Welcome Ryan!

During the summer, I had the opportunity to introduce our new Associate Director, Ryan McDonough. Ryan has been with us at Timberlane for the last 8 summers. Seven of those summers as a Wilderness Trip Leader and this past summer as an Assistant Director. Ryan will be working with me year-round, focusing on Wilderness Trips, hiring staff, and getting ready for the summer. We are very lucky to have Ryan with us and very excited to have him aboard.

YO EVERYONE:

CAMPER ENROLLMENT

We don’t want to forget to mention that we have opened enrollment for next summer, and already have lots of kids signed up.  We invite you to REGISTER YOUR CAMPER as soon as possible.

Memory Book

We have received our 2022 Memory Book for you guys. There are so many pictures in it.  It includes cabin photos with a list of all the kids and staff in each cabin.  It includes team rosters from UN Day and Titans Day.

If you purchased a Memory Book this year, we will bring yours to our reunions this fall.  If you live in a city where our reunion will be later in the winter or in a place we won’t be able to get to this winter, we will ship your book to you.

OUR CURRENTLY SCHEDULED REUNIONS:

We will send you invitations to the reunions via email.  St. Louis, Houston, and Chicago reunions are first, and emails for campers and staff in those areas have already gone out.  If you feel you should have received an email about a reunion, and you did not, please let us know so we can correct the situation.
