Happy Fourth of July from Camp Timberlane.
Today was a fantastic day. We started with a gift, an extra hour of sleep, and the PA’s snuck into the lodge before anyone was up to decorate the whole place. The boys woke up to donuts, music, and a dining hall that already felt like a party.
After cabin clean-up and clinics, which included some highly competitive seed spitting and a waterfront packed with activity, we sat down to chicken patties and fries with a live music soundtrack. Good food, great energy, and a whole lot of summer in one lunch period.
Then came the main event. A Timberlane Revolution.
It started, as all great revolutions do, with taxation. Campers arrived at canteen to find their normal candy replaced with minis. They weren’t having it. What followed was a full-scale, campy re-enactment of American history. The crossing of the Delaware. The signing of the Declaration of Independence. The Battle of Bunker Hill, fought entirely on the trampolines. And a flotilla of camper-built boats carrying tea across the waterfront that, eventually and inevitably, sank. The founding fathers would have been proud.
Rest period gave everyone a chance to recover before we launched into the Alien Invasion. Campers built cities out of solo cups, then teams lobbed tennis balls as artillery trying to level each other’s skylines. A worthy nod to Independence Day.
Dinner was roast beef, and then we loaded up the buses and headed into downtown Minocqua for the fireworks show. Minocqua really knows how to do it. The boys watched with the kind of wide-eyed quiet that only a great fireworks show can produce.
It was a perfect Fourth of July.
Benches up,
Sam
