What a day!!
Sundays around here have always been special days. The reason why used to be because the camp got a bit of a sleep-in, while the admin team made Lazy Breakfast, where we essentially operate a make-to-order egg restaurant of omelets, bacon, toast, and bullseyes (eggs in toast). We still do that part, and this morning was another VERY busy but wildly successful Lazy Breakfast for the cooks and particularly our hungry customers. I make the bullseyes, and we went through 150 eggs alone. I have no idea about the omelets.
These days, we have set Sundays aside as days to do something off the regular schedule. The entire staff is on duty for the day, and we take advantage by doing some things that a typical day can’t accommodate. This Sunday, we started with a couple of activity periods we missed due to rain earlier in the week, which is another fringe benefit of these unique spots on our calendar. The weather, by the way, was sunny and mid-70s. Literally perfect.
After lunch, we signed up for the last series of activities for first session. That was a marker in time I did NOT expect to have happen so quickly. Where has this session gone? Two weeks already? Impossible!! Yet, here we are.
After signups, we took some photographs for the camp memory book, since everyone was in camp. Look for those in the annual yearbook, coming out sometime this winter. Then the campers headed up to the C.A., and they made runner’s bibs for our annual Timberloop fun run. We had music along the course, and some campers ran, others walked, but it was definitely a good time. We had a slip-and-slide and some games for kids to enjoy when they came back. It was a great afternoon with plenty of camaraderie and activity, and it was wonderful to have the whole camp together for the day.
After a barbecue dinner, we had a station game based on the gold rush, where campers find gold items scattered around camp by the staff and try to get them to “the bank” without being caught by robbers. Or leprechauns. (Our staff members.) As I worked on signup rosters and staff assignments, I could see out my window the chaos and excitement as campers tried to earn gold for their blue or white team, it was clear the run might have taken some energy out of the boys, but they had plenty left for this high-energy program. I am certain they will sleep well tonight.
Finally, since we always love one more good surprise, we had our camp “big brothers” connect with the little brother they were assigned in the months leading up to camp, and we lit up the trampolines for a trampball social under the lights. It was a great experience, and a wonderful end to a very special, and long (in a good way) day!!
Tomorrow’s the last day of 2nd series of activities, and we’ll fill you in on all the details tomorrow. For now, thanks for reading!
Best wishes, and benches up!
